I was born in the Philippines and migrated to Arizona after high school. While growing up I aspired to become a teacher, but by the time I reached the USA, that desire had faded. Due to both a desire to be in a helping profession, and because of the nursing shortage, I entered nursing school. At age 18, I received my LPN degree. This experience confirmed that I had chosen the right profession. Although becoming a LPN afforded me financial independence, there was much more to learn about nursing in order to become an effective nurse and deliver high-quality, prudent nursing care. In 1989, I received my Associate Degree in Nursing, then a BSN in 1991, and in 1997, a Master of Nursing Management. In over 16 years of nursing, I have worked in five different nursing specialties: hospital-based nursing, clinical instructor, home health, community health, and occupational and environmental health. Ten of those years have been in occupational and environmental health nursing. This specialty allowed me to develop health and safety programs, promoting health and well being for the working population. I strongly believe that by engaging in primary prevention programs, we can impact escalating health care costs.
