Tom S.

Philadelphia, PA
RN; Medical/Surgical

I used to be a paramedic and was attracted to nursing because of the job security, flexible scheduling and good pay the field offers. Nursing is challenging because there is always new information to absorb and you have to learn how to handle different patients and their families. But that is also one of the best parts of the job! I have met some great people and never feel that my job is dull. Because I have a family with two small kids at home, nursing really provides the job security I need. I know I can always find work and that is a relief. But the best part about nursing is the one-on-one contact you get with your patients. Watching someone come in really sick and then getting better before your eyes is really amazing. It’s great to have a job helping people to heal. Even though there are still many more women than men in nursing, I think the field is becoming less gender-specific, especially at fast-paced units like the ER and the ICU.
